Book Giveaway!

August 6, 2019

As promised I'm giving away 3 copies of What She Found in the Woods

For those who don't know what the book is about, here's the blurb:

"After a scandal breaks in her elite New York City private school, Magdalena is shipped off to her grandparents’ sleepy Pacific Northwest town to spend a summer recovering under the radar. Over-medicated and uninspired, she spends her days in a fog, hiking in the woods behind her grandparents' cottage.

But then gorgeous wildboy, Bo, stumbles across her picnic blanket and Magdalena starts believing she might be able to move on from her past. The only problem seems to be the series of crimes breaking out across town, and when a body is found in the woods near Bo’s encampment, it’s clear that Magdalena’s nightmare is just beginning."

There are only three requirements to enter the giveaway.

There are two big topics addressed in my new book, What She Found in the Woods.  One is mental illness and the other is drug addiction.  While it may seem like piling on to have two weighty issues like these in the same book, I did it because these two issues are linked in my mind.

My brother Jerry used to work in a homeless shelter while he was getting his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling at Boston University.  He observed many instances of mental illness and addiction in the homeless population, and that many times the two afflictions went hand in hand.  Have you ever seen a homeless person shouting into thin air and wonder if that person was mentally ill or high?

It can be hard to tell, even for doctors, so he created a master’s level program for dual diagnosis that allowed for the integration of substance abuse/addiction classes with classes for psychiatric disabilities and physical disability issues including head trauma.  He also worked at an inpatient psychiatric and substance abuse hospital that was first of its kind.

Because of my amazing brother, I’ve had the concept of mental illness paired with drug addiction in my mind for a long time.  My main character, Magdalena, is a product of that.

Usually, when I do a giveaway on my site I require people who want to participate to leave a comment.  I really want to encourage a dialogue about these two issues, but I’m trying to figure out the best way to go about it.  I want to create a safe place for people to share their thoughts, but I realize that with such hot-button issues there is bound to be conflict.

With that in mind, I urge you to leave a comment about your thoughts or experiences with either the opioid crisis or with mental illness, but please be respectful.  If you don’t have any experience with either of these things, feel free to offer your compassion and support to those who have.

With Love,

Josie

The deadline to enter is August 16th.
